There is a long list of things that inspired The Pavers. The most powerful and defining inspiration would have to be none other than music. I'll never forget when my middle school teacher asked us to make a list of our favorite poems as a class. She stood waiting, bracing herself with her chalk ready as if we were about to spew out an overwhelming list for her. Aside from the kid in the back that recited the "Beans, Beans the Magical Fruit" chant, no one else could think of anything. Poetry seemed so...foreign and ancient to us. And so the awkward stare-off began, before she finally laughed and headed over to the radio she kept next to her desk. We all smiled as music floated through the air and she watched us carefully, waiting for us to understand.
"Music IS poetry," she had called out. "There's so much meaning behind each song, and it's only heightened by the melody, the beat, and the artist."
I think in that moment, I fell in LOVE with literature and music. My silly middle school brain had never put two and two together, but after that, it was imperative I analyze each song, and delve into their deeper meanings.
We are musical beings and are inclined to express ourselves creatively through art, literature and music. It's what makes us human. Music allows us to connect, and to feel. So I hope you enjoy these songs, as each one rings loudly with the struggles, romance and adventure that my characters face.
